RIMOWA is seeking a highly motivated and experienced materials scientist with specific expertise in metals to join our team. The materials scientist will work on R&D projects within the growing RIMOWA innovation department, looking at new alloys for the sustainable future of travel-goods and luggage. As a materials specialist, you will be responsible for conducting research and development projects related to metals, including the development and testing of new alloys, surface treatments, and testing methodologies. This position will be responsible for providing expert insights, project management, and technical guidance on metals and inorganic chemistry related projects. The role requires technical skills paired with a curious mind and a flexible approach. This role will work both autonomously within the Innovation department, and collaboratively with Product Development, Quality and Production teams. The ideal candidate will possess the energy and motivation to conduct meaningful research and push forward the brand’s innovation and sustainability strategy. This position reports to the Innovation Manager.
Responsibilities:
- Plan, manage and deliver various metal alloy focussed R&D/innovation projects
- Conduct research and development related to metals, including the potential development of new alloys, surface treatments, and testing methodologies
- Analyze data from internal and external experiments and to synthesise concepts, conceive ideas and develop simulations, models, samples and physical prototypes
- Work with cross-functional teams to identify opportunities for the use of new metals or metal alloys in our products
- Collaborate with manufacturing and quality control teams to ensure that metals used in our prototypes and products meet the company's standards
- Conduct technical feasibility assessments, and evaluate various alloys for applications in travel-goods and luggage
- Conduct and support various prototyping activities internally and with external partners
- Identify areas for product optimisation and improvement, especially in terms of performance and sustainability
- Identify new technologies and techniques such as additive manufacturing
- Create reports, presentations and briefings for internal teams and managers
- Keep up-to-date with the latest advances in metalworking technology and research
