At JetBrains, code is our passion. Since 2000, we have been building the most effective developer tools on the planet – automating routine checks and corrections so developers can focus on growth, discovery, and creation.
The Python Ecosystem team behind PyCharm – one of the world's most popular Python IDEs – and the Python plugin for IntelliJ IDEA is redefining how developers write, debug, and ship code. As AI reshapes the developer landscape, we are making our Python tools AI-native. We are looking for an AI Lead to architect this transformation, build key components hands-on, and guide the team in making confident decisions around AI-powered product development.
In this role, you will:
- Drive the technical design of AI features across PyCharm and our Python tooling – including MCP integrations, agent workflows, tool design, and context management.
- Prototype and ship features yourself – this is a hands-on technical leadership role, not a pure management position.
- Accelerate the team's adoption of AI technologies through technical guidance, approach reviews, and practical pattern sharing.
- Evaluate emerging AI tools, frameworks, and providers, making pragmatic calls on what to build versus what to integrate.
- Collaborate closely with product managers, ML engineers, QA specialists, and senior developers to turn product ideas into solid technical plans.
- Navigate a large Kotlin/Java codebase and expose IntelliJ Platform capabilities – code analysis, inspections, refactorings, type inference – to AI-powered workflows.
- Contribute to cross-team AI efforts and help define shared engineering patterns where appropriate.
We'd love to talk to you if you have:
- Strong software engineering experience, particularly in Python and/or Kotlin/JVM.
- Deep, hands-on familiarity with modern AI tooling for developers – coding assistants, agents, MCP, and LLM-based workflows.
- Experience delivering meaningful technical change in large, mature codebases without compromising quality.
- Familiarity with LLM evaluation and benchmarking.
- A track record of making sound technical decisions in fast-moving, ambiguous areas – proposing architectures, building prototypes, iterating on feedback.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to influence technical direction without formal authority.
- A genuine product sense and a commitment to solving real user problems, not just building interesting technology.
Nice to have:
- Experience with IDE or developer tooling internals – language servers, code analysis, or related systems.
- Hands-on experience with the Python AI/ML ecosystem.
