The research group is mainly interested to understand the homeostatic function and maintenance of tissue macrophage networks and is investigating the underlying processes and mechanisms. Tissue macrophages are resident immune cells and found in nearly every tissue from insects to mammals. Whereas tissue macrophages are well known to fight back infections and repair tissues, they also serve a plethora of physiological functions under steady state conditions to maintain tissue homeostasis. Primarily, our research group wants to unravel how the molecular machineries guiding unique macrophage networks are created in each organ and how these cells communicate throughout their network during homeostasis and disturbance.

Project 1: Exploring lysosomal dysfunction in macrophages and its connection to immune-mediated pathologies, using Drosophila melanogaster and transgenic mouse models.

Project 2: Characterization of macrophage specification in adult Drosophila melanogaster and the comparison to murine tissue-resident macrophages

In both projects, we will employ two model systems, the mouse and the fruit fly, with a wide range of different techniques including flow cytometry, transcriptomics, metabolomics, histology, automated image analysis or in vivo imaging.

The candidates should hold a master’s degree in biology, biomedicine or an equivalent discipline. Experience in immunological methods or work with flies or mice is desirable.
