The job
Benzothiazole (BT) and mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) are high production volume chemicals and widespread contaminants in the environment. Whereas BT was described to be degradable by different microbial species. MBT seems to be more resistant against microbial attacks. However, studies on the fate of BT and MBT in the environment are limited. The Department of Technical Biogeochemistry offers a master's thesis on the stated topic from April 1, 2024 (or later).
Your tasks
- Set up of cultures using soil as inoculum aiming for enrichment of BT and MBT degrading microorganisms
- Characterization and (ideally) isolation of BT and MBT degrading microorganisms by classical microbial techniques
- Characterization of the initial step of BT and MBT biodegradation by stable isotope tools

Your profile
- Studies in the field of biology, microbiology, biochemistry or comparable environmental science disciplines
