One of the most powerful astronomical instruments of the future is currently being planned on behalf of the European Southern Observatory: ANDES – the high-resolution spectrograph for the European Extremely Large Telescope, the largest optical/infrared telescope in the world. As a member of the international ANDES Consortium, Hamburg Observatory will contribute to its construction in collaboration with 34 other institutes. This revolutionary instrument will provide breakthroughs in many areas of astrophysics – from exoplanets to cosmology.
We are looking for a talented and dedicated individual to support this astronomical instrumentation project in the area of technical software development.
Specific Duties
As a precision instrument, ANDES will require a versatile and complex calibration unit. You will develop the calibration unit’s operations software and hardware control in a self-directed manner, covering the entire project cycle from requirements gathering, design and implementation to integration with higher-level systems. You will independently coordinate this development work with the hardware and software development teams of other ANDES sub-systems within the collaboration. In this way, you will contribute to the success of the ANDES project in a challenging and international environment.
Requirements
- university degree (master’s or equivalent) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics or in a similar engineering or natural science discipline

- equivalent skills, experience, and qualifications
Verification of equivalent skills, experience, and qualifications for the last prerequisites will be conducted on hiring.
Required skills and personal qualities
- fluent in at least one, preferably several programming languages (e.g. Python, C or C++)
- experience with software development tools
- experience with the design and implementation of software projects, preferably in the context of projects by the European Southern Observatory, the European Space Agency, or similar organisations
- experience with Programmable Logic Controllers would be an asset
- ability to work in a team
- very good communication skills
- very good organisational skills
