Our IOCB-research group in the Faculty of Chemistry at Bielefeld University, consisting of a team of 15 to 20 staff members, focuses with research topics on industrial organic chemistry and biotechnology, working on these within the framework of various national and international publicly funded third-party projects.
As part of the research project "chemoenzymatic syntheses" as a contribution to sustainable chemistry, the combination of chemocatalytic and enzymatic reactions to organic syntheses carried out in a reactor without processing intermediates is studied. This minimises the use of solvents as well as the formation of waste and significantly increases the overall process efficiency. An essential prerequisite is the compatibility of the reaction steps involved. One focus of this research project is the linking of metal catalytic reactions with biotransformations, whereby both syntheses are to be carried out simultaneously in a suitable liquid reaction medium. First, the individual reactions will be investigated and optimised with regard to their combination. Then the respective one-pot synthesis is to be realised and also carried out on an enlarged laboratory scale. These novel methods should also provide access to target molecules with industrial relevance in an economically attractive and sustainable way. The experimental work will be accompanied by computer-assisted process modelling.
