The Vector Biology Department is looking for a highly motivated
Student Assistant (m/f/d), 10 h/week (HiWi Student)
for weekend work in our insectary from May 2024
TASKS & RESPONSABILITIES
Insectary
- Supervision and rearing of mosquito strains (Anopheles species):
- Ensuring fresh food of both larvae (liver food) and adults (soaked sugar pad)
- Splitting larval stages to optimal density
- Assisted guidance of the mosquito cycle from egg-laying to adult mosquito (Floating eggs and adding new egg dishes)
- General insectary cleaning and order maintenance
The very nature of the job requires high sense of responsibility and moderate to high physical activity and mobility in order to handle mosquito’s culture containers
Cell Culture
- Culturing of erythrocytic stages of Plasmodium falciparum (S2 level): Exchanging culture medium
- Culturing of HC-04 liver cells: splitting, seeding, exchanging culture medium
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
The ideal candidate is a student in her/his early stages of a Bachelor degree in Biology, Medicine or any related subjects.
- There will be given preference to the candidates with previous experience in cell culture work, preferable in Plasmodium cultures and/or human blood cells.
- She or he must be available to work regularly on weekends and on public holidays.
- Motivation to work regularly in an insectary and to become skilled at Anopheles- and Plasmodium-related techniques
- Basic computer skills to handle electronic Lab notebook
- Effective communication in English in both written and verbal forms
- Flexibility and team work
