Proton-exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis is a leading technology for green hydrogen production. A deep understanding of the ageing behaviors of PEM electrolyzer components under real-world operating conditions is critical for developing cost-effective and durable PEM electrolyzer stacks and optimizing stack operation.

This PhD position focuses on pinpointing and understanding the degradation mechanisms of a key component in PEM electrolyzers. You will develop and validate electrochemical and analytical methods as ageing indicators. Through designed experiments (DOE) at the sub-scale level, you will capture the primary ageing stressors of the component and elucidate degradation mechanisms. This understanding will lead to the establishment of a predictive ageing model for the state of health (SoH) under industrial operation.

• Share your knowledge: Enhance the work of our interdisciplinary and international research team and disseminate your findings through publications in high-impact journals.

• Education: Excellent Master of Science degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, or a related field.
• Experience and Knowledge: Strong background in electrochemistry and electrochemical reactors (e.g., PEM fuel cells, PEM or AEM electrolyzers); hands-on experience characterizing fuel cell or electrolyzer sub-scale cells; familiarity with standard electrochemical analytical methods (e.g., CV, LSV, EIS); basic programming skills (e.g., Python) and experience with simulation tools (Comsol) or numerical optimization approaches are advantageous.
• Personality and Working Practice: Open-minded, critical thinker, collaborative, highly motivated, and eager to learn.
• Languages: Proficient in English; German is beneficial but not required.
