The Math Consultant supports Trades & Apprenticeship students with numeracy course content to strengthen their knowledge and improve confidence through direct service delivery, development of self-help resources, and anticipating mathematical barriers. As an integral member of the Library & Learning Services and Math team, the incumbent works collaboratively with Student Success colleagues and the Trades & Apprenticeship Program teams to develop and organize proactive and responsive math support delivery models.
Successful candidates will be required to conduct work within Ontario and must be available to work on campus as required. It is anticipated that this position will meet the needs of the department through a hybrid work arrangement with 4 days on-site, and 1 day remote.
Responsibilities:
Service Delivery
- Providing math and numeracy support to Trades & Apprenticeship students across all campuses, with a primary focus on the Conestoga Skilled Trades Campus
- Working to strengthen numeracy skills and improve the math confidence of students through individual and group appointments and/or drop-ins (in person and/or virtually)
- Maintaining contact/service records in conjunction with the Math service team
- Developing and facilitating experiential workshops for targeted math classes
- Assisting with the proposing, planning, and delivering of targeted programming to support numeracy skills for Trades & Apprenticeship students
- Liaising with Trades & Apprenticeship faculty and program teams, Student Success staff, and other college personnel
- Participating in appropriate Student Success initiatives and special events (e.g. Orientation, co-curricular workshops, special events with a focus on academic skills)
- Acting as an ambassador of Student Success supports and services in all interactions with faculty, staff, and students
Research & Development
- Staying current in the fields of math and numeracy, adult education, skilled trades, and technology
- Working proactively, and in partnership with management and Math team, to research and respond to changing student demographics, institutional trends, program, and curriculum design
- Researching service delivery models for the Math service, with a focus on Trades & Apprenticeship, and preparing recommendations for proactive, responsive, innovative, efficient service
- Researching, developing, and maintaining appropriate resources and self-directed materials for students, including the development of virtual resources
Administration
- Supporting the operations and management teams in the development and maintenance of Math Consultant training documentation and best practices
- Collecting and maintaining statistics relevant to Ministry reporting and the requirements of the College as requested by the operations and management teams
- Tracking and monitoring trends and patterns in service delivery, with a focus on Trades & Apprenticeship programs
- Working with the operations, management, and program teams to evaluate the effectiveness of service delivery and identifying key areas for improvement in service delivery
- Preparing reports and proposals as requested by management
- Participating in relevant meetings and actively contributing to the progression and operations of the larger Student Success team, Library & Learning Services, Math team, and college committees
- Promoting the math support services
- Providing support to Peer Services related to hiring, training, and development of tutors in math specific areas
