Job title: Associate Publisher (m/f/d) – Humanities and Social Sciences Journals
Location: Heidelberg
About the role:
Within our dedicated editorial team in Business, Economics, Social Sciences and Statistics which is part of the Humanities and Social Science (HSS) Journals Unit. The team responsible for the business in Europe and in South Asia handles approximately 140 academic journals, hybrid and open access, in English and German language.
The Associate Publisher is responsible for the editorial management and strategic development of a portfolio of journals, particularly in business/management, operations research, and organizational psychology, in German and English.
Responsibilities
- Manage the journal portfolio, in line with the overall strategy of the Journals group, supported by team and line manager.
- Serve as the main contact point for external partners, in particular Editors-in-Chief and Managing Editors, and build close working relationships.
- Address queries from journal editors, authors, and reviewers and help resolve pre- and post-publication issues.
- Understand and manage the journals’ objectives, discuss and implement strategic initiatives.
- Liaise closely with colleagues from the publishing team and from other departments, such as production, research integrity etc.
- Hold editorial meetings (in person and virtual) with external editors.
- Engage in company-wide initiatives such as open access; SDGs; publishing ethics; DEI.
Experience, skills and qualifications
- Master degree or equivalent, preferably in a relevant field of study (social sciences)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and German
- Strong analytical skills and IT literacy
- Excellent networking and team-working skills
- Capable of working with demanding stakeholders
- Resourceful and proactive in dealing with problems and queries
- Able to work independently within a (virtual) team environment
- Capable of organising and prioritising numerous tasks
- Experience in academic (journal) publishing welcome
