MSF is an independent international medical relief organisation, with 28 offices worldwide. When large-scale epidemics occur, when areas in crisis are too dangerous for many other organisations, then our medical teams are there to assist the affected population. We organise basic medical care, treat the injured, carry out vaccination campaigns, train local staff and build up medical infrastructure. In long-term aid projects our teams fight diseases like tuberculosis, malaria, sleeping sickness, and HIV/AIDS.

There, where no medical services are available, your deployment becomes even more important.

Do you have the confidence to take on medical responsibility for the team as the only doctor in a project? If you are deployed with us in a crisis or war zone, this may well happen. In addition to your clinical knowledge, you also need a lot of initiative and the ability to set priorities.

Doctors do not only provide emergency medicine in an acute crisis. They can also be responsible for basic medical care in refugee camps or health centers, or fight a cholera or meningitis epidemic, for example. We also increasingly run programs against what are called neglected diseases such as tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, malaria and sleeping sickness. The focus of all projects is the training or supervision of medical staff in the crisis area. Data collection and contact with the authorities is also of great importance. As a doctor, you will also plan, organize and evaluate the medical tasks in our areas of operation with local health personnel.

We are currently looking for doctors with experience in pediatrics, especially neonatology, minor surgery, surgical emergency and intensive care.

Our Requirements

• License to practice medicine and at least four years of clinical experience
• Experience as a doctor in one or more areas such as general internal medicine, emergency room, infectious diseases, acute and chronic diseases, minor surgery or pediatrics, ideally knowledge of TB/HIV treatment
• Experience in professional supervision, or in training and further education of other staff is desirable
• Availability for at least twelve months, an even longer period would be desirable
• Fluency in English, knowledge of French is a big plus, other languages such as Arabic are also an advantage
• Travel or work experience in African, Asian or Latin American countries. If you do not have work experience abroad, participation in a tropical course is required. A list of possible courses can be found (all information without guarantee).
• Willingness to take medical responsibility for the team in the project, ideally experience as a manager
• Ability to work in a team, cultural sensitivity, organizational and improvisational skills as well as a high level of mental and physical resilience
• Willingness to work in accordance with Médecins Sans Frontières humanitarian principles, charter and mission statement
