The European Geosciences Union (EGU) is the leading organisation for Earth, planetary and space science research in Europe. With our partner organisations worldwide, we foster fundamental geoscience research, alongside applied research that addresses key societal and environmental challenges. The EGU’s Policy Programme helps its scientific community to engage in the policymaking process and facilitates the integration of timely, relevant, accurate, and useful scientific advice in European policymaking for the benefit of society.

We are seeking a Science for Policy Work Student to support the EGU’s Policy Programme and its activities. The position will be on a flexible-part time basis and based at the EGU Executive Office in Munich with potential for remote work. This selected candidate will work on initiatives that support the integration of scientific evidence into EU policymaking processes. Through this work, they will gain a better understanding of how researchers and external stakeholders can engage in EU policymaking and how scientific institutions can more effectively create policy impact.

Main tasks:

• Researching and summarising EU legislation and EU policy news for EGU members who may be interested in sharing their expertise
• Supporting EGU Task Forces with their policy impact by facilitating meetings, supporting the creation of policy briefs, and disseminating information to policymakers
• Assisting with science for policy initiatives such as the EGU’s Science-Policy Pairing Scheme and EGU’s Science for Policy events in Brussels
• Measuring the impact of EGU’s science for policy initiatives and policy engagement
• Supporting science for policy sessions at EGU’s General Assembly
• Creating and disseminating content relating to the EGU’s Policy Programme

Requirements:

• Meet the conditions of the German work-student programme (there is a good explanaition at https://www.munich-business-school.de/insights/en/2022/what-is-a-working-student/, be living in Germany for the purpose of full-time education).
• Pursuing a graduate degree in a relevant field (preferably in a geoscience or political science field)
• An understanding of the EU’s political system
• Ability to understand and translate complex science into simple concepts
• Willingness to work as part of a team
• Excellent interpersonal, organisational and communication skills
• Expert command of English
• Non-European nationals are eligible to apply, provided they have some knowledge of the European decision-making system.

Salary and starting date:
This position, to start in early December 2024, will be subject to a 6-month probation period. As per the conditions of the work-student programme, the employee will be limited to 20hours work per week and will be paid a standard 12.41€ per hour.
