About the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)

The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas. The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.

About the Position

The Public Diplomacy Manager is responsible for the development of the Australian Embassy Berlin’s public diplomacy program, including media and social media strategies. This position supervises a small team and works closely with the Ambassador.

The key responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

• Lead on the development and implementation of the Embassy’s public diplomacy program and related activities, including budget management;
• Manage and/or oversee Embassy events related to public diplomacy;
• Coordinate responses to media enquiries, develop and maintain networks of media contacts, and plan media opportunities including during high-level visits and special projects;
• Lead the public diplomacy team to develop and publish the Embassy’s social media content and other online material;
• Liaise with internal and external stakeholders including representing the mission at external events and functions; and
• Manage a small team of staff responsible for implementing the public diplomacy program.

Qualifications/Experience

• Well-developed planning and organisational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities to meet tight deadlines;
• Excellent written and oral German and English communication skills;
• Proven experience in managing and implementing public programs, including project management, budgeting and marketing;
• Strong networks in the media and/or cultural sectors in Germany and the ability to develop and maintain productive working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders

Desirable

• Tertiary qualifications in Arts, Media or Communications, or a related field;
• An understanding of Australian foreign and trade policy priorities;
• Experience working in or with government.

Selection Criteria

In your written statements, you must include relevant high-level examples from your experience that support your claims against the role. The word limit is strictly 250 words per response. The panel will not assess responses which exceed the word limit.

A. Demonstrated experience in public relations, communications or marketing, with responsibility for content creation and press liaison.

B. Excellent written and oral communication skills in both English and German, with the ability to use these communication skills to build networks with a range of stakeholders.

C. Strong planning and organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and to direct the workflow of a team.

D. Experience organising key high-level events and the ability to represent your organisation.

E. Proven ability to manage stakeholders and establish and maintain a network of relevant contacts.
