The Faculty of Biology, Department of Genetics and Genomics of Plants, has the following job opening:
The research projects of the Department of Genetics and Genomics of Plants are based on the integrated application of molecular biological methods, genomic high-throughput technologies and applied bioinformatics. Our goals generally lie in the identification and characterization of genes and gene families that are of interest for breeding and/or for basic research in biology.
Grapevine (Vitis vinifera) is one of the oldest and most widespread cultivated plants of mankind. V. vinifera is primarily endemic to the temperate regions of the Mediterranean, Central Europe and Southwest Asia, although nowadays large cultivation areas are also found in both parts of America, Australia and the Western Cape of Africa.
The traditional grape varieties grown in Germany and Central Europe are usually highly susceptible to several major pests and stresses, which is reinforced by the advancing climate change. Closely related wild Vitis species are known to offer positive resistance or tolerance properties. Such genotypes are increasingly being used in grapevine breeding. However, the genetic architecture of the wild Vitis species, the genome regions transferred to the new breeds and the respective molecular regulation mechanisms of the transferred characteristics ("traits") are largely unknown.
The research subject of the position to be filled is the genetic and genomic characterization of phenotypically relevant grapevine genotypes as well as the molecular identification of genes, gene families and regulatory mechanisms for responses to environmental stress in grapevine.
