The philosophy of science research group at Bielefeld University consists of a motivated, international community of more than twenty pre- and postdoctoral researchers, three professors in philosophy of science (Prof. Marie I. Kaiser, J.-Prof. Alkistis Elliot-Graves, and Prof. Martin Carrier [until 2024/5]), and one professor in history and philosophy of medicine (Prof. Lara Keuck). Our research is characterized by a practice-oriented, interdisciplinary approach. We work closely with scientists, especially in biology and medicine. For example, we are part of the DFG-funded Collaborative Research Centre “A Novel Synthesis of Individualization across Behavior, Ecology and Evolution: Niche Choice, Niche Conformance, Niche Construction (NC3)” (TRR-SFB 212). We are also involved in the Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies of Science (I²SoS) that brings together historians, sociologists and philosophers of science.
Your Tasks
- conduct independent research in the philosophy of the life sciences and in related areas (50 %)
- teaching at Bachelor and/or Master level in philosophy and/or in the Master’s program “Interdisciplinary Studies of Science”; 4 courses per year, in German or English (25 %)
- contribute to writing grant applications and to organizing workshops/conferences (15 %)
- actively participate in the meetings and events of the philosophy of science group and the Department of Philosophy (5 %)
- organizational tasks that are part of the self-administration of the university (5 %)

Your Profile
We expect
- university degree (e. g., Master or Diploma) in philosophy or a discipline that is relevant to the philosophy of the life sciences (e. g., biology, medicine, psychology, science studies)
- PhD in philosophy of science or in a related area
- independent and innovative research profile in the philosophy of the life sciences (e. g., philosophy of biology, philosophy of medicine)
- experience or interest in interdisciplinary research collaborations
- relevant, peer-reviewed publications or their concrete preparation
- appropriate teaching experience in philosophy of science and in related areas; successful candidates are expected to teach also on subjects beyond their own research foci, and to adapt their teaching to the specific needs and capabilities of our students
- flexibility in research management support
- cooperative and team-oriented style of work
- autonomous, self-reliant and committed manner of working
- strong coordination and organization skills
- good proficiency in written and spoken English
