This Dr. med. thesis project titled “Evaluation of cardiovascular drug effectiveness and safety from health claims data using AI for causal inference” will focus on evaluating the potential use of health claims data in the cardiovascular field to develop real-world evidence (RWE) to support agency regulatory decisions, such as approval of new indications for already approved drugs. This project is part of DigiMed Bayern.

• Learn to apply established research frameworks to a health claims dataset of 1.3 million individuals
• Help to establish novel machine learning techniques for predicting individual health outcomes by mapping out patient journeys under expert guidance and in close partnership with the Computational Health Center at Helmholtz Munich
• Participate in conducting a rigorously designed RWE study under close supervision to provide complementary evidence to randomized controlled trials (RCTs), e.g. including broader inclusion/exclusion criteria

• Have preliminary knowledge of and first hands-on experience with programming languages such as Python and R, and are able to write SQL queries, particularly for purposes like data analysis and statistical modeling
• Possess a humble attitude, an eagerness to help others, and a strong desire to pick up whatever knowledge you're missing to make your team succeed
• Operate with high horsepower, are adept at frequent context switching and working on a project with expansive ownership, and ruthlessly prioritize

This position, starting in February/March 2024, with a full-time commitment of a minimum of two semesters, offers a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of developing cutting-edge methods and conducting high-impact studies in the field of cardiovascular health. You will have access to a vast dataset of 1.3 million individuals, enabling you to explore and bridge the gap between RCTs and RWE. Our program also provides the possibility of an academic stay at Harvard Medical School in Boston, USA. As part of our team, you will receive comprehensive mentorship from top experts across various disciplines, enhancing your skills and contributing to impactful research that informs clinical decision-making regarding the effectiveness and safety of cardiovascular drugs.
