One Support Staff Full-time Replacement Position & One Support Staff Full-time New Position

(First consideration for Support Staff and Academic positions will be given to internal applicants in accordance with the respective Collective Agreements)

The Technologist assists faculty by managing the use of facilities and supports faculty by assisting with the demonstration of equipment and lab operations, in consultation with faculty to teach practical skills based on established learning objectives. The incumbent will also demonstrate skills to students and complete remedial instructions for students who require further assistance in mastering practical skills.

The Technologist is also responsible for the setup, operation, and maintenance of a wide variety of shops and equipment. The incumbent will provide technical support in matters of a complex nature that will require a high degree of independent judgment, technical specialization, and experience.

Successful candidates will be required to conduct work within Ontario and must be available to work on campus as required. It is anticipated that this position will meet the needs of the department working five days per week on-site at our Reuter Skilled Trades Campus. Occasional work may be required at other campuses as needed.

Responsibilities:

• Demonstrates safe use of equipment to students
• Demonstrates practical skills to students based on established learning objectives
• Prepares labs for instructions
• Provides remedial instruction to students requiring further assistance in mastering required practical skills
• Evaluates equipment and supplies before ordering
• Prepares purchase requisitions for student’s supplies and shop/lab equipment
• Maintains inventory of all supplies and shop/lab equipment
• Assists with the maintenance of facilities
• Diagnoses faults and repairs complex equipment and general lab equipment
• Designs, constructs, installs, and modifies equipment after consultation with faculty
• Assigns work to work-study or co-op students and guides them to ensure completion of their tasks
• Provides input on course content and set up of programs
• Provides occasional coverage of classes when faculty are unexpectedly absent (Note: does not include teaching of new material or any evaluations for marks)

Qualifications:

• Certificate of Qualification or Certificate of Apprenticeship (or other accredited and approved Apprenticeship program) as a Construction & Maintenance Electrician (309A) or Industrial Electrician (442A) is required; Proof of completion of Apprenticeship training in the Province of Ontario is required
• Five years of related industrial experience as a licensed journeyperson, including experience with installing machinery
• Ability to operate complex electrical and automation equipment and systems and analyze resultant data
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• A high level of organizational skills
• Must be self-motivated and creative in order to develop and maintain the lab as a relevant, dynamic learning resource for the program

• Leadership and problem solving skills
• Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
