As part of the Sasol Chemicals’ Product Safety function, secure the long-term marketability of Sasol Chemicals’ products with adherence to Product Stewardship and Corporate principles. This requires that all regulatory requirements are fulfilled, that environmental information is maintained and updated; and that new and existing products are characterised with respect to their risk using information about environmental hazards and reasonably foreseeable exposures.
Recruitment Description / Key Accountabilities
- Ensure products of Sasol Chemicals, in accordance with Sasol’s strategy and objectives, can be produced, utilised and marketed without posing any risk to the environment.
- Initiate and monitor ecotoxicological and environmental fate studies on Sasol Chemicals’ products and conduct environmental hazard assessments for Sasol Chemicals’ products.
- Assess the risk to the environment over the entire lifecycle of Sasol Chemicals’ products and, if any potential risks are identified, develop strategies to mitigate such risks.
- Monitor environmental fate and effects information and related regulatory developments, trends, and evaluates their impact on Sasol Chemicals’ products.
- Coordinate the utilization of outside consulting services for Global Product Safety projects such as product registrations and submissions.
- Represent Sasol Chemicals in registration and testing consortia (e.g. REACH), ensuring that Sasol’s interests are considered.
- Prepare and exchange information with ecotoxicology experts from academia, government agencies, customers and industry in order to assess the inherent properties of substances with the overall aim of securing Sasol’s market position in accordance with the principles of “responsible care”.
- Represent Sasol’s interests in national/international industrial associations, science, government & industry committees to achieve divisional and overall company objectives
- A university degree in the field of natural sciences (chemistry, pharmacology, biology) and a post-graduate degree in ecotoxicology (experimental and regulatory) are prerequisites
3- 5+ years in chemical or related industry and in ecotoxicology
Required Personal/ Professional skills
- Familiarity with International chemical control laws
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written)
- Presentation skills and experience required
- good knowledge of common system (MS Office, ideally SAP EH&S)
- knowledge of simulation tools & software (IUCLID, Chesar, etc.)
