DESCRIPTION

The Amazon Robotics team is seeking an experienced Applied Scientist to join our team in Berlin. In this role, you apply cutting-edge research to solve complex real-world challenges in robotics and artificial intelligence. You collaborate with a world-class team of scientists and engineers to holistically design, build, and deliver end-to-end robotic systems. Furthermore, you contribute to core infrastructure and tools that empower roboticists, machine learning scientists, and software engineers to deploy scalable systems directly in the field.

Key job responsibilities:

Research, design, implement, and evaluate complex perception, motion planning, and decision-making algorithms leveraging modern machine learning.
Create experiments and prototype implementations of new learning algorithms and prediction techniques.
Work closely with software engineering team members to drive scalable, real-time implementations.
Collaborate with machine learning and robotic controls experts to implement and deploy models.
Partner with hardware engineering teams on hardware-software co-design from early prototyping to full production level.
Represent Amazon in the academia community through high-impact scientific publications and presentations.
Work with stakeholders across hardware, science, and operations teams to iterate on systems design.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

PhD in engineering, computer science, machine learning, robotics, mathematics, or equivalent quantitative field.
Strong programming experience in Java, C++, Python or related languages.
Experience in implementing state-of-the-art scene understanding, computer vision algorithms, or robotic manipulation approaches.
Track record of delivering customer-facing results in robotics applications.
Technical leadership experience within interdisciplinary teams across computer vision and robotics.
Publication record at major conferences or journals such as RSS, NIPS, ICRA, CVPR, CORL, or IJRR.
Demonstrated experience mentoring and coaching junior team members to support their career growth.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Relevant research experience developing algorithms for robotic computer vision and motion control.
Experience in large-scale data collection, vision-language models, transformers, and ML models in robotic products.
Understanding of hardware trade-offs, sensor selection, and embedded real-time system architectures.
Experience with physics engines and transferring algorithms from simulation to real-world environments.
Proficiency in developing and maintaining software architectures for complex robotic systems.
Proven ability incubating and productionizing new technology from concept through large-scale deployment.
